Schloss Neuschwanstein
Schloss Neuschwanstein rises on a rugged hill above Hohenschwangau, where Bavaria’s Alpine foothills meet lakes and the narrow Pöllat gorge. King Ludwig II commissioned the palace as a private retreat and tribute to Richard Wagner. Its historicist design combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine elements with slim towers, semicircular arches, and theatrical detail. Christian Jank drafted the design, while architect Eduard Riedel developed it. The builders raised brick walls with white limestone from a nearby quarry, while marble from near Salzburg shaped other surfaces. The Palas contains frescoes in the local Lüftlmalerei style. Ludwig personally approved each draft, yet the palace remained unfinished when visitors entered after his death. Ludwig lived in the unfinished palace only briefly. The setting includes Hohenschwangau Castle, Alpsee, Schwansee, and views across the surrounding Bavarian landscape. Its story connects royal ambition, Wagnerian imagination, and nineteenth-century castle Romanticism.
