Altes Rathaus Handschuhsheim
Altes Rathaus Handschuhsheim stands in Heidelberg’s Handschuhsheim district as a former town hall with Italian Renaissance palace influences. Its construction dates from the years 1877 to 1878. The two-storey façade has five axes, a central projection, and a column-supported balcony. Above it, a Palladian window has three sections.
Before this building appeared, the site held the Hornecksche Adelshof, a noble estate with an earlier history. The municipality of Handschuhsheim joined Heidelberg in 1903. The building continued as an administrative branch office until about 1930 after that incorporation. Inside, a vestibule staircase serves the building’s rooms.
A memorial in the entrance commemorates people from the area who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. One room is the Karzer, an old detention cell. Another room is the Bürgersaal, where community meetings and events took place. The building holds status as a protected historical monument.
