Arkaden Neues Haus

Arkaden Neues Haus in Hanover preserves a layered local history through restored arcades and musical architectural details. A pesthouse once stood beyond the city fortifications. By the mid-eighteenth century, the site served as a guesthouse and later welcomed excursions, theatre, and concerts. The location also displayed Hanover Zoo's first animals during the nineteenth century. Architect Paul Rowald designed the concert hall with terraces, a concert garden, and planned greenery. The Neues Haus became a destination near Eilenriede. The original half-timbered building gave way to a concert hall, while the area later took the name Emmichplatz. The building suffered only minor damage during the Second World War. After demolition, the University of Music, Drama, and Media occupies the site. Its Brutalist design draws on an ear and reflects the university's musical purpose. Sandstone figures show musicians, while the arcades preserve details representing the four seasons. The restored arcades keep Hanover's concert history clearly visible in carved stone.
