PROTOTYP -Das Automuseum
PROTOTYP - Das Automuseum stands in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt, presenting German sports and racing cars developed after the Second World War. The privately funded museum opened in 2008.
Its collection follows designers and drivers who revived German racing after 1945, including Otto Mathé and Petermax Müller. Volkswagen technology shows how pre-war engineering shaped early post-war cars. Self-built prototypes stand beside racing, record, sports and modern Formula cars, tracing several directions in automotive design.
Glass cabinets beside the vehicles add historical objects and stories about the people behind them. A digital library lets you browse photo albums belonging to racing drivers and engineers. In the walk-in Audiobox, you can trigger several historic engine sounds. A driving simulator built into a real Porsche 356 turns one display into a hands-on experience. Wheelchair accessibility makes this Speicherstadt museum easier to explore.
