Tượng đài Lý Thái Tổ
The Tượng đài Lý Thái Tổ, also known as the Ly Thai To Statue, stands in Hà Nội’s Indira Gandhi Park. It portrays Emperor Ly Thai To in bronze.
Ly Thai To founded Vietnam’s Ly Dynasty and is credited with founding Thang Long, later called Hà Nội. The city’s earlier name remains central to the monument’s historical meaning.
His right hand holds the Chieu Doi Do, the decree associated with moving the capital to Thang Long. His left hand points towards the place where construction began.
Vi Thị Hoa designed the statue after winning a competition organised by Hà Nội’s cultural authorities. Her selected design became the completed bronze monument.
The sculpture is Vietnam’s largest bronze statue and stands on a substantial pedestal. Its bronze figure rises above the pedestal.
Local visitors honour the emperor with flowers and incense beside the monument in the park. The surrounding park also supports walking, dancing, and games.
Indira Gandhi Park bears the name of an Indian prime minister who supported and befriended Vietnam. The monument commemorates Hà Nội’s liberation within this public setting.
