Khu di tích 18 Hoàng Diệu
In Hà Nội, Khu di tích 18 Hoàng Diệu preserves an archaeological landscape connected with the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel. Four zones, marked A, B, C and D, reveal different parts of the city’s past.
Excavations began in December 2002 and uncovered architectural remains spanning more than 1,300 years. The deepest layer belongs to Đại La-era Thăng Long, with wooden columns, sewers, wells, bricks and beast-decorated tiles. Above it, Ly and Tran foundations include stone pillars and carefully decorated roof ornaments. Later layers preserve traces of the Dinh, Early Le, Ho, Le, Mac, Le Trung Hung and Nguyen dynasties.
Blue and yellow Le-era tiles carry dragon images once used on royal palaces. Together, these remains show how Thăng Long developed across successive dynasties without losing its place in Hà Nội’s history.
