Shtëpia e Ismail Kadaresë
Shtëpia e Ismail Kadaresë stands in Gjirokastra’s historic Palorto neighbourhood, among stone buildings and preserved traditional architecture. The house served as Ismail Kadare’s childhood home.
Built in 1799, it became a cultural monument in 1991 and now functions as a museum. A restoration followed a fire in 1999. Rooms preserve family objects, including a chest and photographs, while displays trace Kadare’s life and literary career. Digital material adds historical context to the exhibits. The novelist describes the house and his childhood in Chronicle in Stone, including experiences shaped by the Second World War. His books circulate in about fifty languages, making him Albania’s most widely translated writer.
The stone construction connects personal memory with Gjirokastra’s architectural character. Kadare offered his birthplace to the city through a public letter, enabling its transformation into a museum. Family photographs and one chest give the visit its clearest human detail.
