Karwendel und Karwendelvorgebirge

Karwendel und Karwendelvorgebirge is a nature reserve in Bavaria, forming part of a protected Alpine region across Austria’s border. Together, the protected area covers about 920 square kilometres in the Eastern Alps. The Bavarian section contributes 190 square kilometres beside the Tyrolean Karwendel Nature Park. Nearly 100 named mountains rise through forests, valleys, cliffs, and high alpine terrain.

Östliche Karwendelspitze reaches 2,537 metres above routes for hikers, climbers, and mountaineers. The Soiernumrahmung circles Soiernhaus before reaching a mountain lake. Secured trails include the Mittenwalder Höhenweg, while the Gerberkreuz Südwestgrat and Luftige Kante challenge experienced climbers. Longer routes connect places such as Fall, Grammersberg, Grasköpfl, Mittenwald, Rehbergalm, and Hochlandhütte.

The Kleiner and Großer Ahornboden preserve ancient maple groves within a Natura 2000 protected area. Deep gorges and high rock faces give Vomperloch its comparison with the Grand Canyon. Golden eagles, ibex, chamois, and sandpipers live among old-growth forests and wild rivers. Rare German tamarisk grows in riparian woodland, adding a delicate detail to this rugged mountain setting.
