Seckbacher Ried
Seckbacher Ried is a nature reserve in Frankfurt, shaped by the former floodplain of the Main River.
The Main River once flooded this landscape.
Open meadows and ditches now border a developing silver willow forest, which bears the scientific name Salix alba.
Unmown areas have allowed woodland to spread across parts of the wetland since the 1940s.
The reserve covers about eight hectares in Frankfurt.
Zebu cattle from the Caucasus graze the remaining valley meadows and help maintain their sensitive wetland setting.
Their light feet limit damage to the ground.
An observation platform gives you a view towards the herd when the animals appear.
The site also connects with efforts to improve local water supply.
A water project includes a spring-water pipeline and a new ditch course.
Seckbacher Ried brings woodland, meadow, cattle grazing, and water management together within Frankfurt’s natural landscape.
