Schelmenburg
Schelmenburg stands in Frankfurt-Bergen-Enkheim as a medieval water castle with a moat and bridge. A baroque main building from around 1700 occupies the historic site.
The earliest structure was probably a wooden motte from the 12th or 13th century. A member of the Schelme von Bergen family appears in records from 1194. Imperial trade routes helped give this stronghold a strategic role during the High Middle Ages. Frankfurt forces occupied the castle during the family’s conflicts with the city in the late 14th century.
Friedrich Adolph Schelm zu Bergen rebuilt the main building as a manor around 1700. The grounds now include a youth music school, local associations, a town hall, and residential buildings. The preserved moat and bridge connect the baroque residence with its medieval origins.
