Rothschild Stele
The Rothschild Stele stands in Frankfurt on Bockenheimer Landstrasse, marking the former Palais Rothschild. The sandstone monument remains wheelchair accessible. Nearby, a neo-Gothic ornamental tower still rises from the grounds.
Amschel Mayer Rothschild acquired the original country house in 1816, before Friedrich Rumpf transformed it into a Roman Renaissance-style villa. Reception rooms and an English landscape garden made the estate a retreat during Frankfurt’s urban expansion. The park also included a greenhouse and an orangery, although neither survives.
An air raid destroyed the Palais in 1943, leaving the stele to preserve its memory. Dating from 1878, it bears Amschel Mayer Rothschild’s coat of arms in sandstone.
