Mausoleum von Gans stands in Frankfurt’s central cemetery as the city’s largest family mausoleum. Friedrich von Gans built it in 1909. Friedrich Christoph Hausmann designed the structure with inspiration from the Tempietto at Rome’s San Pietro in Montorio. Its architecture connects a Frankfurt family memorial with a celebrated Roman Renaissance model.
Friedrich von Gans worked as an industrialist and art collector, while his family had roots in the Jewish merchant community. Their later influence included important work in the chemical industry. Inside, Salviati’s dark mosaic creates the effect of a night sky. Dozens of golden stars shine across that ceiling, giving the family resting place its clearest visual detail.
