Luftbrückendenkmal Frankfurt am Main
The Luftbrückendenkmal Frankfurt am Main stands at Frankfurt Airport as a memorial to the Berlin Airlift. The airport played a significant role in airlift operations. Metal plaques at the base carry a dedication and the names of people who died during the airlift. Two aircraft, a Douglas DC-3/C-47 and a Douglas DC-4/C-54, stand nearby.
The Luftbruecke Chapter of the Airlift Tanker Association raised 940,000 marks for its construction in 1985. Restoration made regular visitor access possible from 12 September 2008. The displayed DC-4 carries registration 44-9063, although this particular aircraft did not serve in the Berlin Airlift. The aircraft itself was built in March 1945. It later flew for Pan Am and other airlines before appearing in the 1964 film Flug in Gefahr. The Berliner Meilenstein marks 550 kilometres from the Frankfurt Cross to Berlin. The stone once stood between the A5 carriageways before road widening moved it in 1970.
