Ludwig Rehn
Ludwig Rehn is a history spot in Frankfurt, recalling the German surgeon born in 1849 in Bad Sooden-Allendorf. He studied medicine at the University of Marburg and served during the Franco-Prussian War. His career later reached Frankfurt State Hospital, where he became surgical director.
In 1896, he repaired a stab wound to the heart, completing the first successful cardiac operation. He performed the first thyroidectomy in 1880. He helped identify a link between aromatic amines and bladder cancer among aniline-factory workers in Frankfurt. This work laid groundwork for understanding occupational cancer risks. He later became a professor of surgery at the University of Frankfurt. During the First World War, he served as surgeon general.
