Kontinuität
Kontinuität is a granite sculpture by Max Bill, located in Frankfurt and associated with concrete art. Deutsche Bank commissioned the work for its headquarters, known as the Twin Towers.
The sculpture later moved from the tower forecourt to a nearby green space. Sardinian granite gives Kontinuität its massive material presence.
The stone, called Rosa Sardo, contains feldspar, quartz, and biotite across its distinctive surface. A temporary road helped transport the block towards Marina di Carrara.
Bill shaped and polished the granite through an extended process. The finished form continues his exploration of infinite loops through mathematical design.
Its distinct edges distinguish Kontinuität from a Möbius strip, despite the common comparison. A compass-based method enlarged the design from a smaller model with geometric precision.
Bill developed forms absent from nature as a representative of the Zurich School of Concrete Art. The sculpture connects mathematical thinking with modernity, rationality, and technology.
