Karl Fehler
The Karl Fehler Stolperstein in Frankfurt commemorates a woodworker, communist organiser and opponent of Nazi rule. The small brass memorial is wheelchair accessible.
Born in 1905 to a working-class family, Karl Fehler joined the Communist Party of Germany by 1925. He later became a leading communist in Frankfurt. In 1933, he won election to the city parliament but could not take his seat after the party was banned. He continued distributing forbidden communist literature and protecting comrades from Gestapo arrests. The Gestapo arrested him in 1934 while he distributed leaflets, and a court sentenced him to five years for preparing high treason.
After his release in 1939, authorities arrested him again in 1941 and deported him to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He died there later that year. His wife Anni and their children fled to the Soviet Union, where Stalinist purges later claimed her life. The brass stone keeps one Frankfurt resistance story at street level, where a lowered gaze brings the history close.
