Johann Caspar Goethe
Johann Caspar Goethe was a jurist who lived in Frankfurt am Main during the Holy Roman Empire. Born in 1710, he held the title of imperial councillor without joining the city’s official affairs. The family lived in a large house, where his daily life centred on family and instruction.
He married Catharina Elisabeth Goethe, the daughter of Frankfurt’s mayor, when she was seventeen. Private tutors taught their children six languages: Latin, Greek, French, Italian, English, and Hebrew. Their lessons also covered dancing, riding, and fencing. He pursued this broad education because he felt his own opportunities had been insufficient.
His son, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, became one of Germany’s most celebrated writers and thinkers. Johann Caspar died in 1782, after shaping his son’s love of literature and the arts. Although trained in law, he devoted his life mainly to family education rather than legal practice.
