Höchster Altstadt

Höchster Altstadt is Frankfurt’s historic district, set beside the Main with medieval streets and preserved half-timbered houses. Since 1972, protected heritage status has safeguarded this riverside setting and its historic character. The lanes lead towards landmarks, gardens, and the meeting point of the Nidda and Main.

Höchster Schloss began as a residence of the Mainz archbishops and developed between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its exhibitions present the history of Hoechst AG and local porcelain production. Nearby, Justinuskirche reaches back to around 850 and contains a Gothic choir inside Frankfurt’s oldest church. Classical concerts also use the basilica as a venue. Bolongaro Palace dates from 1772 to 1774, when Italian snuff manufacturers built it with a garden. Pavilions, sculptures, and the Neptune Fountain frame views towards the Nidda’s confluence with the Main.

The Höchster Porzellanmanufaktur ranks as Germany’s second-oldest porcelain manufacturer after Meissen. Kronberger Haus holds a collection of its porcelain, linking local craftsmanship with the district’s architectural heritage. The Bürgervereinigung Höchst, founded in 1971, supports historic buildings through cultural initiatives. Beside the palace garden, the Neptune Fountain remains a distinctive detail among pavilions and sculptures.
