Hauptgebäude Städel Museum (Mainflügel)

The Hauptgebäude Städel Museum, also called Mainflügel, stands on Schaumainkai beside Frankfurt’s River Main. The museum occupies a Neo-Renaissance building designed by Oskar Sommer.

Banker and patron Johann Friedrich Städel founded the institution through a bequest of his house, collection, and fortune. The museum began in his former living quarters.

Its collection traces European art from the early fourteenth century through the Renaissance, Baroque, modern, and contemporary periods. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, prints, and books form its holdings.

Works by Botticelli, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Beckmann represent distinct chapters of European art. Max Beckmann adds a German perspective from the twentieth century.

The building carries a history of reconstruction, renovation, and architectural expansion. A later extension created space for modern art and special exhibitions.

The museum combines exhibition rooms with conservation and restoration work for its collection. Temporary exhibitions bring changing themes and artists into the Hauptgebäude.

Digital offerings include a digital exhibition, audio guides, free Wi-Fi, and a Städel app. The digital collection makes artworks available online for further exploration.
