Gravity and Growth

Gravity and Growth stands outside the European Central Bank’s main building in Frankfurt as a large contemporary sculpture. Italian artist Giuseppe Penone created this sculpture in Frankfurt. The work presents a tree rising seventeen and a half metres, with bronze and granite forming its substantial structure. Gilded leaves gather near its upper branches.

Penone connects the tree form with ideas of stability, growth, and the relationship between nature and humanity. Those ideas shape the sculpture’s place beside the bank. The work belongs to the European Central Bank’s art collection, which presents contemporary European art across several buildings. Its setting joins art with Frankfurt’s financial landscape.

Penone is associated with Arte Povera, an Italian movement that often examines natural materials and human experience.
