Gedenkstätte Arbeitserziehungslager Heddernheim

The Gedenkstätte Arbeitserziehungslager Heddernheim is a Frankfurt memorial commemorating a labour education camp from the Nazi era. It recalls the camp’s role in the city’s history. The camp occupied a clay pit beside a former brickworks at the northern edge of Heddernheim. Detainees endured harsh conditions at the Heddernheim camp. They slept on straw mattresses, had limited washing facilities, and wore blue clothing associated with the Blue Division. Lice and inadequate food marked daily life in the camp. Camp food included potato soup made from unpeeled potatoes, water, and a small amount of margarine. Forced labour also took place beyond the camp. Detainees worked for companies including the nearby Heddernheim copper works and received minimal wages. The site also served as a transit point to concentration camps. Detention could follow minor offences or resistance activities, while punishment included physical abuse and forced exercises. The memorial preserves this history in Frankfurt.
