Else Rothschild

Else Rothschild’s story connects a Frankfurt family, Jewish community life, persecution, emigration, and remembrance through Stolpersteine. She was born in Frankfurt as Bernhard and Lina Rothschild’s youngest daughter. Her father Bernhard and uncle Isidor opened a Frankfurt business for linen and manufactured goods. The family moved between Frankfurt homes as family and business needs changed. Else attended the Jewish Reform School Philanthropin with her sisters Lilly and Martha. She belonged with her family to Frankfurt’s Jewish community. During the 1930s, Else worked as private secretary to Dr Ralph Bergel, who handled Jewish welfare in Frankfurt. Else emigrated from Germany to Argentina in 1938. Her parents’ escape ended with Bernhard’s death during the voyage and Lina’s arrival in Buenos Aires. Else later lived in Buenos Aires with Lina until her mother’s death in 1956. Frankfurt’s Stolpersteine commemorate Else and her family, preserving their names within the city’s Holocaust remembrance.
