Domturm

Domturm rises above Frankfurt as the tower of the Gothic Frankfurt Cathedral, also called Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew. Its stone tower reaches ninety-five metres above Frankfurt.

The tower’s construction shaped the cathedral’s Gothic profile and Frankfurt’s historic skyline. The Frankfurt cathedral is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.

Although called a Kaiserdom, the church was never a cathedral in the ecclesiastical sense. Its imperial history explains the cathedral’s familiar name.

Holy Roman Emperors were elected and crowned here, linking the building with Frankfurt’s political history. The observation platform stands sixty-six metres above ground.

From there, the view includes Frankfurt, the Main River, the Taunus, and the Odenwald ranges. A narrow staircase leads visitors towards the platform.

The narrow ascent connects the interior tower route with the lookout above Frankfurt’s cityscape. The new Frankfurt Old Town spreads below the lookout.

The cathedral’s history reaches back to the seventh century, while its present structure rests on an earlier Merovingian church. The Domturm connects Frankfurt’s medieval architecture with its modern skyline.
