Damenstift der Cronstetten- und Hynspergischen evangelischen Stiftung

The Damenstift der Cronstetten- und Hynspergischen evangelischen Stiftung stands in Frankfurt as a protected architectural monument with a long institutional history. Alexander von Lersner designed the building in the late nineteenth century. It began as a Damenstift, a residence for unmarried noblewomen supported by the Cronstetten and Hynsperg Foundation. Justina Catharina Steffan von Cronstetten founded that foundation in the eighteenth century. Its charitable purpose focused on unmarried or widowed noblewomen, giving the building a clear social role. War brought a darker chapter to the property.

During the Second World War, the building was forcibly sold to the Gestapo and used as headquarters for the Wiesbaden district. Many records from that period were destroyed. After the war, the building housed the office of Frankfurt’s mayor before returning to the foundation. The foundation then converted it into offices. Banks and other office tenants later occupied the building, which generated rental income for charitable work. Those rental earnings support the foundation’s charitable activities. A commemorative plaque marks the building’s history and preserves its place in Frankfurt’s architectural landscape. The foundation also promotes social and cultural initiatives. The building links a residence for noblewomen with wartime history, municipal offices, and charitable purpose. Its protected status records the building’s architectural importance.
