Bürgerhospital Frankfurt
Bürgerhospital Frankfurt stands in Frankfurt am Main’s lively Nordend district, near the German National Library. Its hospital buildings combine a working medical setting with traces of Frankfurt’s civic history.
Johann Christian Senckenberg founded the hospital in 1779 with six beds for local citizens. Donations expanded the facility to thirty beds by 1783. Originally located near Eschenheimer Tor, it moved to Nordend in 1903. Parts of the original façade and its clock tower travelled to the new site.
The hospital serves as an academic teaching hospital of Goethe University and University Hospital Frankfurt. Its specialist departments include maternity care, neonatal intensive care, paediatric surgery, thyroid surgery and hernia surgery. A new building opened in 2019 with operating rooms and delivery suites. The site also contains a simulation centre for emergency training and one of Germany’s few outpatient heroin clinics.
