Bockenheimer Depot
Bockenheimer Depot stands in Frankfurt’s Bockenheim quarter as a former tram depot turned theatre venue. Yellow brick walls and red cornices frame a three-nave hall beside a public square. Wheelchair access makes the historic industrial landmark easier to experience.
Built around 1900, the hall replaced a wooden shed serving horse-drawn trams. Electric trams worked here until depot operations ended in 1966. A new depot in Praunheim then closed the old railway workshop, while the tracks remained until about 1986. Hessian law has protected the structure as a listed monument since 1979.
Today, Oper Frankfurt and Schauspiel Frankfurt use the venue for Baroque opera, contemporary musical theatre, and guest performances. Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and Georg Friedrich Haas’s Nacht have both reached its stage. A wooden roof inspired by French Renaissance builder Philibert de l’Orme spans the hall, preserving a rare industrial design. After an opera-house fire in 1987, Frankfurt Opera performed here before the main house reopened in 1991.
