Beethoven-Denkmal
Beethoven-Denkmal stands among the greenery of the Taunusanlage in Germany, surrounded by a quiet park setting. Georg Kolbe created the monument as a group of solid, composed figures. The central figure does not immediately present Beethoven’s familiar face to anyone who looks closely. A strong jaw and high, squared forehead suggest him without creating a straightforward portrait.
The sculpture uses allegory to honour Beethoven’s genius rather than reproduce his appearance. Several figures gather in poses that combine strength with contemplation. An inscription on the base provides the clearest clue, dedicating the group “to the genius of Beethoven.” In the surrounding greenery, the monument turns musical greatness into a question of imagination rather than recognition.
