Rosa Luxemburg
Rosa Luxemburg stands as a bronze sculpture in a small park in Erfurt, between Schlüterstraße and Talstraße. The setting lies near the Boyneburgufer, where the artwork remains somewhat hidden among the surrounding paths. Anke Besser-Güth created the seated figure for public space, and its installation took place in 1974.
The sculpture commemorates Rosa Luxemburg, co-founder of the Communist Party of Germany and advocate of internationalism and pacifism. Her life ran from 1871 to 1919, while her writing shaped Marxist theory and socialist debate. The work was originally intended for the SED district party school in Daberstedt. Its interpretation did not fully match the political views of the DDR regime, so the sculpture moved to its present setting.
That relocation connects the quiet park with the tensions surrounding Luxemburg’s ideas during the DDR period. The bronze figure holds a book, linking her seated posture with intellectual work and freedom of thought. Its presence also reflects a vision of socialism grounded in democracy, tolerance, and room for dissent.
