Grabenkaponniere I.
Grabenkaponniere I. stands within the Petersberg Citadel in Erfurt, Germany, as a fortified work built between 1824 and 1825. The surrounding citadel forms a star-shaped Baroque fortress. More than 1,000 years of history surround one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved urban fortresses.
One-metre-thick walls protected mobile artillery and helped defend the fortress’s main trench. Beams and earth cover its bomb-proof ceiling. Renovation between 1995 and 2000 restored historical features and removed later modifications.
The Thüringer Vinarium now occupies the building, with tastings focused on regional wines. Around the citadel, a panoramic path overlooks Erfurt, while listening passages and an interactive exhibition reveal the fortress’s military history.
