Ibiza Castle (Almudaina)

Ibiza Castle (Almudaina) crowns Dalt Vila, Eivissa’s old town, with a fortress complex shaped by Phoenician, Roman, Arab and Christian rule. From the hilltop, you can see the city, the port and the southern coast across the Mediterranean.

The Almudaina preserves an elongated layout with nine square towers, while the citadel has quadrangular grounds and twelve towers along its walls. Archaeological remains reach back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, although the main building dates mainly from the sixteenth century, with eighteenth-century infantry barracks around the parade ground. The fourteenth-century keep rises above older Moorish remains, and the governor’s house recalls the government officials who once lived here. Sant Jaume Bastion now presents weapons and military technology from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, including cannons, muskets and swords. Sant Pere Bastion explores the city walls and displays a Renaissance scaffolding reconstruction.

Both bastions were designed by Giovanni Battista Calvi in 1555, giving the grounds a precise link to Renaissance military engineering. You can walk between the walls and towers while the exhibitions bring the fortress’s defensive role into view.
