Catedral de Santa Maria d'Eivissa

Catedral de Santa Maria d'Eivissa stands at the highest point of Dalt Vila, Eivissa’s old walled city. From this hilltop, you can look across the city and towards Formentera from the rooftop. The church occupies the site of Eivissa’s former mosque, after Catalan troops conquered the island in 1235. Its position served both religious and defensive purposes within the fortified settlement.

Inside, a single nave opens onto fourteen side chapels, while the polygonal apse and five-storey bell tower show strong Gothic influence. The tower and apse took shape between the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. An unusual feature places the main entrance and façade along the building’s side, rather than directly before the altar. Later work restored the organ, the image of Santa Maria de les Neus, the apse windows, chapel roofs and façade buttresses.

For centuries, this was Eivissa’s only parish church, serving Eivissa and Formentera under the Diocese of Tarragona. It became a cathedral in 1762, when the Diocese of Eivissa was established. The dedication to Santa Maria de les Neus connects with the conquest’s 8 August date and the nearest Marian feast. Dalt Vila, including this hilltop church, belongs to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
