Gekooide Vrijheid
Gekooide Vrijheid stands in Eindhoven as an abstract bronze sculpture by Hans van Eerd, rising about four metres above the ground. Its bird-like form leans forward, creating the impression of wings preparing to lift away.
Within the bird’s claws, a crouching human figure appears enclosed and held. The city commissioned the monument after Eindhoven’s Amnesty International branch requested it for its twenty-fifth anniversary, and the work was unveiled on 12 December 1987. Van Eerd, trained at the Academy for Visual Arts in Tilburg, shaped the sculpture around freedom, oppression and the human urge to escape. A plaque identifies the work as a monument for Amnesty International and records the bronze and 1987.
Flowers and messages have found their way to the sculpture during commemorations of human rights and freedom. The signed bronze remains memorable for the contrast between the trapped figure below and the bird’s forward movement towards release.
