Fokker F-27-300M Troopship
In Eindhoven, Fokker F-27-300M Troopship stands as a military transport aircraft with a civilian passenger past. Picture a twin-engine, pressurised airliner adapted from the F-27 Friendship.
Fokker developed the design with two Rolls-Royce Dart engines and space for 28 passengers. Serial 10161 entered Royal Netherlands Air Force service with 334 Squadron. Passenger routes later linked Amsterdam with Eindhoven, Enschede, Maastricht, Groningen, and Rotterdam. That period gave the aircraft the name Willem Versteegh. After returning to military work, it supported United Nations peacekeeping operations in Cambodia.
Retirement led to storage at Woensdrecht, sale to South Africa, and cargo work. A nose-wheel collapse at Pretoria Wonderboom left it derelict. Faded markings eventually accompanied the local nickname Little Solly. Across the F-27 series, 786 aircraft were built, including 206 under United States licence.
