Zum schwarzen Horn
Zum schwarzen Horn stands on Ratinger Straße in Düsseldorf, with a three-axis Baroque façade shaped in 1780. Its right-hand entrance has a transom window. Decorative frames surround the door and windows, while a black horn relief appears above the central ground-floor window.
From 1470 to 1544, the building served as Düsseldorf’s old town hall, housing mayors and city councillors. Johann von Berck owned the house in 1581. The Hanoverian bombardment damaged it in 1758, and it became an inn in 1774.
Structural instability led to demolition in 1957, but the façade survived and the building rose again. Christian Dietrich Grabbe lived there in the early nineteenth century. The gable tympanum carries a ducal coat of arms and the motto “In Deo Spes Mea A 71”.
