Kunstakademie

The Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf presents historicist architecture shaped by the Italian Renaissance and designed by Hermann Riffart. Its north-facing façade follows the former harbor basin. Basalt lava forms the basement, while tuff and Udelfanger sandstone define higher surfaces and architectural details. Ionic columns frame the main entrance beneath a rounded arch. The decorative façade carries a frieze naming prominent artists, alongside city emblems and European art cities. Athens, Florence and Paris appear among those names.

The three-storey building was created after fire destroyed the academy's former home in Düsseldorf's Residenzschloss. Its studios received northern light from the harbor-side setting. War damage later led to reconstruction that preserved the exterior walls while modernising the interior spaces. The Kunstakademie remains a centre for fine arts, art education and architecture in Düsseldorf. Students work independently with professors and use workshops plus access to art-related sciences. Its educational setting combines professor-led guidance, well-equipped workshops and access to sciences related to art. The building is wheelchair-accessible for people using mobility aids.
