Haus Nakatenus
Haus Nakatenus is a protected residential monument in Düsseldorf-Niederkassel, shaped by Bernhard Pfau’s geometric arrangement of abstract cubic forms. From the street, it appears as a single-storey flat structure.
Pfau designed the house between 1954 and 1955, fitting its partly two-storey structure into the surrounding dyke. Shifted sections and room cubes give the building visibly different volumes. Its west facade once opened almost completely towards the garden through large transparent insulating-glass panels.
Each panel measured three metres by three metres, creating a strong connection between interior and garden. Dark-tinted glazing later reduced that original transparency. The sculptor Marianne Jovy-Nakatenus once lived here, linking the architecture with Düsseldorf’s artistic life.
