Ehrenhof-Ensemble
Ehrenhof-Ensemble rises in Düsseldorf as a cultural and architectural complex shaped by strict symmetry, monumental forms, and expressionist brick façades. Wilhelm Kreis designed the ensemble for the Gesolei exhibition in the 1920s.
The Tonhalle Düsseldorf, first called the Rheinhalle, began as a multipurpose hall with a planetarium in mind. A gold-coloured star still crowns its dome. Inside, Adolf Luther’s ornamentation meets Günther Uecker’s light sculpture, known as the Stalactite Field. Renovations in the 1970s preceded recognition by North Rhine-Westphalia as an exemplary building.
Across the complex, the NRW Forum occupies a former museum for social and economic sciences. The building later housed various museums before becoming a venue for contemporary art and culture. The golden star above the Tonhalle remains the clearest reminder of an unrealised planetarium.
