The bridge forms part of Pier One, a development designed by Christoph Ingenhoven and supported by 160 piles over the water. Four bridges connect the project with Speditionsstraße, Kesselstraße and Weizenmühlenstraße, linking working areas and leisure spaces across the harbour. The wider scheme includes two five-storey building sections, roof terraces, a public atrium and 21,500 square metres of gross floor area. Its idea grew from the Living Bridges exhibition shown at Düsseldorf’s NRW Forum in 2000, which presented a network of floating and pedestrian bridges for the commercial port.

Two public squares open views towards Düsseldorf’s northern skyline, Kesselpark to the south and the surrounding bridges. The concrete detail that stays with you is the structure beneath Pier One: 160 piles extending across the water.
