Altes Rathaus

Altes Rathaus stands on the northern side of Düsseldorf’s marketplace, in the heart of the old town. Built between 1570 and 1573, the Renaissance building forms the oldest part of the city hall complex and once held meetings for the mayor, aldermen and council.

Its simple brick façade recalls townhouses in Holland and Belgium, while two curved gables frame an octagonal, five-storey stair tower. A lantern and a weather vane shaped like the Düsseldorf lion crown the tower, and a Rococo portal with a balcony stands beside it. The ground floor originally contained two large halls where guilds, including wool weavers, sold their goods. Later changes added pilasters and narrow cornices, while post-war restoration preserved the historic façade and placed a functional building behind it, including the representative Jan-Wellem-Saal.
