Wasserschloss Haus Rodenberg

Wasserschloss Haus Rodenberg stands as a moated castle in Aplerbeck, a district of Dortmund, Germany. Its park surrounds the former mill pond beside the castle.

The site reaches back to the twelfth century, when Aplerbeck belonged to the County of Mark. Records first mention the castle in the thirteenth century.

The residence served Dietrich von Rodenberg before later owners reshaped its buildings across several centuries. Conflict partly destroyed the castle in the fifteenth century.

Rebuilding preceded its transformation into a baroque moated castle during the late seventeenth century. Marriage brought the property to the Bodelschwingh family in the eighteenth century.

The city of Dortmund acquired Haus Rodenberg in 1985 and completed restoration work in 1996. Today, the listed monument hosts seminars, a puppet theatre, dining and weddings.

Cultural events connect the castle’s history with its present role in Dortmund. Its public grounds include an orchard, a beer garden and the former mill pond.

Guided tours provide another way to encounter the site’s medieval origins and later architectural changes.
