Sankt Johann Baptist
Sankt Johann Baptist stands in Brechten, Dortmund, as an evangelical church and the village’s central landmark. Its nearly square hall has three naves, two bays, and a rectangular choir. An older west tower rises beside the building, while a later sacristy extends the structure.
The church’s history reaches back to around 1250, with wall paintings from its first construction period restored between 1960 and 1962. A thirteenth-century baptismal font stands alongside a seventeenth-century pulpit and altar. Dortmund recognises the building as a cultural monument and includes it in the city’s monument register.
Behind the facade, a small Klais organ installed in 2011 brings ten stops to two manuals and the pedal. Two bronze bells remain in the tower: one dates from 1451, while Antonius Paris cast the larger bell in 1652. The smaller bell sounds G-sharp, and the larger one answers in E-flat.
