Haus Wenge
Haus Wenge stands in Dortmund-Lanstrop as a former noble residence and water castle with Gothic forms. Its foundations and parts of the enclosure remain in the surviving complex. First recorded in 1239, the site became the seat of Goswin and Johann von der Wenge during the thirteenth century. The von der Wenge family originated here.
The two-storey manor house took shape in the sixteenth century, with a brick stepped gable and stone cross windows. Spanish troops destroyed it in 1598, but reconstruction preserved its Gothic exterior. Inside, Baroque furnishings and later changes to the portal and chimneys record successive alterations to the building. It appears in Dortmund’s monument register.
The city of Dortmund has owned the property since 1952. Restoration has continued intermittently, while public use includes exhibitions, occasional concerts, and weddings. Its roof measures 25 metres by 14.5 metres and uses wooden nails without supports or purlins. That unsupported construction is unique in North Rhine-Westphalia.
