Besucherbergwerk Graf Wittekind
Besucherbergwerk Graf Wittekind lies in Dortmund’s Syburg district, where coal mining reaches back to 1582. The slopes of the Syberg preserve that beginning. Three successive mines worked the Sengsbank seam before the final Graf Wittekind operation ended around 1900. Restored adits now open the former workings.
Volunteers uncovered and repaired the tunnels about ninety years later, creating an underground museum of pre-industrial mining. About 500 metres of passages run below ground. The route recreates mining methods used roughly three centuries ago, with wedges and hammers for working the coal. The Ruhr Carboniferous exposes stratification, tectonic features, and plant imprints in the rock. Some sections require crawling, while a circular trail above ground links four former Syburg adits. Four former entrances connect the underground experience with Dortmund’s mining landscape.
