Florence Nightingale the 'Lady with the Lamp'
Florence Nightingale the “Lady with the Lamp” is a statue in the City of Westminster, surrounded by London’s historic monuments. Arthur George Walker created the sculpture as a public commemoration of the founder of modern nursing. Wheelchair access makes this spot available to more visitors.
Florence Nightingale organized care for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War in the 1850s. Her nightly rounds through hospital wards earned her the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp.” In 1860, she established the first secular nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Her work also advanced healthcare reform, nursing education and the use of statistical graphics. The lamp remains the detail that connects this Westminster memorial with her wartime rounds.
