Cecil Court

Cecil Court is a historic street in Westminster, linking St Martin’s Lane with Leicester Square through London’s theatre district. Its name comes from the Cecil family. The street emerged in the late seventeenth century as London expanded westward across open land. Victorian facades and small shopfronts preserve much of its distinctive character.

Independent bookshops house rare books, secondhand volumes, theatrical ephemera, and other collectibles along Cecil Court. Goldsboro Books is one of its established bookshops. David Drummond’s Pleasures of Past Times focuses on the performing arts and Victoriana within this specialised setting. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stayed here as an eight-year-old while performing for George III and Queen Charlotte. The street also preserves links with early British film. Early film companies worked here, earning Cecil Court the nickname Flicker Alley. A shop on the street distributed the first film version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The architecture connects book browsing with London’s Victorian streetscape. The location places Cecil Court near Leicester Square cinemas, the Coliseum, and the Royal Opera House. Parliament and the Royal Courts are within walking distance. Actors, writers, politicians, tourists, locals, and theatre-goers have crossed this cultural and commercial thoroughfare. Cecil Court remains a meeting point for literature, music, film, history, and London’s theatre life.
