Streetscape Roeland Street Garden
Streetscape Roeland Street Garden sits in Cape Town as a 350-square-metre urban garden producing organic vegetables. Once a dumping ground, the space now creates work opportunities and income for people experiencing chronic homelessness.
Urban gardening gives participants practical work, purpose and dignity through one of three Streetscapes projects. About 77 percent of participants have moved off the streets, while 68 percent have addressed substance abuse issues. Fresh produce, cross-race and cross-class interaction, and a partnership with Trafalgar High School’s composting programme connect the garden to its wider community.
