Signal Hill Frame
Signal Hill Frame stands in Cape Town as a giant yellow picture frame beside Signal Hill. Its opening places Table Mountain directly in the background for photographs. Measuring 2.8 metres high and four metres wide, the structure creates a striking outline around the landscape. Table Mountain ranks among the New7Wonders of Nature.
Local artist Porky Hefer designed the installation as part of a series across Cape Town. The project formed part of Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 programme, linking natural scenery with urban design. The surrounding series gives visitors and residents different views of Table Mountain from across the city. Each location changes the mountain’s appearance with the daylight and viewpoint.
Pantone C109 supplies the distinctive yellow used for the frame. This colour was the official shade of World Design Capital 2014, tying the photograph to Cape Town’s design programme. Against the mountain, the bright rectangular structure turns a familiar view into a carefully composed scene.
