Magnet Theatre

Magnet Theatre is a Cape Town, South Africa, space for theatre education, performance, and community engagement. This Cape Town space links theatre training with live productions. For over thirty years, the theatre has shaped South African theatre through youth development and job creation programmes. African experiences shape many of its productions.

Research and ideas guide performances that emphasise the language of the body and physical theatre. Full-time programmes prepare young people for theatre work. They also support job creation and seek to transform the industry at every level. The work opens dialogue between internal and external perspectives within South African theatre. Community engagement places training and performance alongside work with communities. Collaborations with arts organisations create performances that reflect diverse experiences of living in Africa. Jazzart appears among the theatre’s named collaborators. Object manipulation and contemporary storytelling give the performances a physical vocabulary.
