Homestead Park
Homestead Park sits in Oranjezicht, Cape Town, with open space for children and dogs to move around. A large wooden jungle gym anchors the playground, beside swings, a high slide, and a merry-go-round. Benches and a nearby café give adults a place to pause while children play.
A scout hall occupies the barn of the original Van Breda homestead, linked to a farm begun in 1719. Scouts South Africa leases the hall, where the 9th and 16th Cape Town Scouts pursue hiking, camping, and survival skills. The scouting groups trace their beginnings to groups formed in 1936 and 1945, while their activities develop leadership and teamwork.
The contrast is easy to picture: children circle the merry-go-round while the old barn stands nearby.
