Monument au Général de Gaulle
On Cannes’s Boulevard de la Croisette, the Monument au Général de Gaulle stands beside Square du 8 Mai 1945. Two granite steles rise among flowerbeds, palm trees, walking paths, gardens and the Mediterranean promenade. This public memorial places French wartime history beside the beaches, hotels and public art of the famous boulevard.
Built around 1975, the work comes from the sculptor Crainer and includes bronze casting by J. Balme. One stele carries a large V for victory, while the other supports a bronze portrait medallion measuring about 36 centimetres across. Directly below the portrait, the double-barred Cross of Lorraine identifies de Gaulle’s Free France. Granite stonework and bronze casting give the memorial its clearest contrast: solid grey forms beside a detailed metal likeness.
